Will at the Computer Will is 18 years old and he finished Grade 12 last year. 2017 is Will’s first year of life after completing his schooling years. He keeps himself busy and active every day of the week doing many different activities with many different people. On a weekly basis we meet to work together on his module work which Practical Life Skills (PLS) offers and provides. We have currently been working together this way since February this year. In our last GEMS Monthly News (Edition 1 - June 2017), there was much talk about Will's current work in the Kitchen - which reflects his Module 3 work in the Daily Living Skills section of PLS'S Menu of Activities. Module 3 in the Daily Living Skills section of PLS'S Menu of Activities targets skills, strategies and routines that encompasses and focuses on 'Preparing and Consuming Food'. Will not only works on 'Preparing and Consuming Food', he also works on Module 1 within the Communication, Reflection and Critical Skills section which specifically targets a number of literacy components which incorporate: -phonic sound activities, sight word activities, reading comprehension and writing from PLS'S Menu of Activities. Will is such an enthusiastic story teller and photographer that with our supervision, support and scribing he has now completed 3 separate digital stories which he has published, with our assistance, as 3 separate PowerPoint documents over the last 4 months. Will has chosen (with support from both PLS and his mum) the topics of each of these 3 digital stories. Each one of his digital stories, at this point in time, is about important times/days in his life that are special to him and he wants to cherish and remember these times/days with great fondness. The titles of these 3 digital stories are:
Here is Will’s story and reflective piece of writing about one of his published digital stories. He enjoys writing and making these stories, and then later making up bingo board activities which specifically concentrate on sight words from each of his digital stories. This is simply helping him to make meaning in his life and world.
